Our Approach

These giraffes are watching each others backs. They are working together to create safety and security for the herd. Giraffes inspire our work with schools. Currently, there is a heirarchy teachers must listen to corrections given by the head teacher, who in turn worries about the corrections given by the School Coordinating Tutors, who in turn worry about corrections by the Inspectors of Schools. What if, we can transform those relationships? What if instead of looking for faults and being associated with worry, the Inspectors of Schools were our greatest ally. What if they took in a nonviolent communication philosophy into their bones. What if it transformed their relationships with School Coordinating tutors? The school coodinating tutors would became so well versed in compassionate methods of teaching children that they were resources for head teachers and teachers? What if schools celebrated when Inspectors and Coordinating Tutors arrived at their school instead of feeling fear? Instead of putting all the emphasis on what schools were doing “wrong” administration and teachers would rejoice together and encourage what is going well. The transformed relationships with administrators would affect the teachers who would have models and ideas for more compassionate interactions with students. Laws have already changed to discourage corporal punishment. Now, teachers, parents, and communities will have the tools to change the social norms. We provide training for those at the highest level of public school governance in nonviolent communication. They will eventually become our trainers so we can multiply the effects we can have. We provide teacher training, and build on our cultural heritage by co-creating songs, stories and games with our teachers. We have the chance for a new generation to grow up without fear of corporal punishment. A new generation whose creativity, and care for the whole has been nurtured and encouraged. Whole communities and eventually countries can be transformed.

Go to the people. Learn from them . . .

Start with what they know . . .

Build with what they have . . .

When he job is done, the people will all say

we have done it ourselves.
